Dear supporters,

When I started this petition well over a year ago, the last sentence of my petition text stated: 'Please help to make the United Kingdom the 56th country to ban corporal punishment of children.'

Well, make that 'the 57th country': France has now prohibited all corporal punishment of children, thus becoming country number 56:

This is wonderful news, first and foremost for the children of France. But it also highlights the continued absence of the UK from the list of countries who have so far banned corporal punishment of children. In fact, there there are now only five European Union member states that are yet to prohibit all corporal punishment of children: Belgium, the Czech Republic, Italy, Slovakia and the United Kingdom.
