Regulate and control vet costs in australia

Regulate and control vet costs in australia

The issue

Many pet owners in Australia are forced to "put down" their beloved pets because the vet industry costs are so high. The average cost of an internal scan for a human is around $200, yet the same scan for an animal is upwards of $700. We recently had our poor dog in at a vet because they found cancer, and the bill for an over night stay, a few tablets and a scan was near $3500 and it would cost another $600 per night not including treatment the vets said they could give him but wouldn't guarantee his survival. Our boy was terminally ill, yet the vet would still try to save him by doing endless testing at huge costs. Just to walk in the door and leave him there overnight, they made us leave a minimum deposit of $500 not including all the other costs. The vet told us that many people need to walk out holding their injured pet and they just die because they can't afford to help them. The vet openly told us that the high costs are to pay for the equipment and upkeep however, a month of charging families these costs would do just that. There is pet insurance of course but the actual costs must be brought down and we need to do something about it.
