New Zealand Parliament: #ChangeTheOath

New Zealand Parliament: #ChangeTheOath
The issue
Currently, members of parliament must swear allegiance to the monarch before being able to take their seats in our parliament. We believe that regardless of whether New Zealand becomes a republic or not, MPs should be swearing allegiance to the peoples of Aotearoa and our Treaty of Waitangi, Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Our elected representatives are in parliament to serve us. Their oath should reflect this. The oath should also reflect the fact that our founding document is the Te Tiriti o Waitangi, without which our parliament could not govern.
This petition calls on parliament to amend the oath of allegiance MPs are required to swear, removing references to the monarch and replacing them with allegiance to the peoples of our country, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
