Tayla Whitehouse started this petition to Parliament

As we all know, this time of year is the only time where the public can legally purchase and utilise fireworks. This is also the time of year where many people, animals and properties are put at risk or harmed due to accidental and in some instances, purposeful misuse of fireworks. It has been proven multiple times that this time of year results in disturbances to the natural ecology, brings unnecessary stress to animals and pets, their owners, and members of the public who suffer from PTSD and other forms of stress related maladies. But it does not take a doctor, veterinarian or specialist to tell you that when the evidence is clearly written upon the face of any animal within the vicinity of these controlled explosives in sometimes very uncontrolled situations. While we can understand and appreciate the symbolism of Guy Fawkes, we believe that it can be celebrated and remembered in ways that don’t bring harm to the environment and all it’s denizens. The purpose of this petition is to enact a change in our country for the benefit of our country. Instead of allowing access to the general population we believe that the sale of fireworks should be reserved for designated public events, resulting in not only a safer premise for the use of fireworks but also not sacrificing the spectacle or the tradition of Guy Fawkes Day. This change will create more opportunities to bring the community together for official displays, resulting in more opportunities to gain revenue, to promote and draw in spectators, and make the overall experience a bigger, better and safer one. Instead of teaching children how to be sensible around fireworks we should eliminate the need entirely, and educate them on the impact it has on their pets, their fellow kiwis, and on their Aotearoa without having to make a massive change.  It’s time to evaluate our priorities, not waste our money on a loud puff of coloured smoke that can potentially be dangerous and look at the negative impacts it has on our environment and loved ones, because at the end of the day, not even Guy Fawkes himself ended it with a bang.
