It's Time to Change the Mascot of Parkwood High School

The Issue

At 59 years of age, Parkwood High School is one of the oldest high schools in Union County. Our school has a great family like atmosphere, and is supported by a caring community that is steeped in the rich tradition of caring for fellow neighbors, and doing good for one another. Unfortunately, as we praise and celebrate the brightest things about Parkwood, we must also acknowledge and work to overcome difficult and troubling parts of our school's history.

Parkwood was a segregated school when it was founded. Parkwood was a school of it's time. And yes, Parkwood had and STILL HAS the "Rebel" as it's mascot. While watered down efforts to distance the mascot from a "Confederate Rebel Soldier" have taken place over the years, it is still FAR from enough. Rebel was never an appropriate mascot, and it certainly is not in the year 2020.

Parkwood is now a school with an integrated and racially diverse student body. It is not only wrong, but totally unacceptable to ask an African American student to wear a jersey with a mascot on it that has ties to a government of opression who fought to keep their ancestors in chains. It is time move past this painful symbol, and no longer glorify it in our community.
