We appreciate your support for construction of a bike park for ages 8+ at Grays Park in East Van. Please consider sharing the petition to your network.
We are trying to draw attention that Parks Board in the City of Vancouver needs to address the needs of riders ages 8+. Vancouver has a vibrant and obsessive bike culture but our older kids are left out. So many fantastic play structures for kids 2-7. We need places where kids can learn bike skills that will expand their worlds to the North Shore and beyond.
The Grays Bike Park does not need to be anything more that what Jay Hoots built at SFU. Clay and dirt with zero hardscaping created a safe and inclusive area for riders of all levels. No permanent environmental footprint.
Today we review the now retired Dirt Jumps at SFU - UniverCity. They were built up over a few years as a temporary use for a site that would be developed.
Trailforks - documenting the life of the Dirt Jumps at SFU
In 2013, Jay Hoots was contacted by UniverCity - an affiliate of Simon Fraser University’s Community Corporation and Community Trust that brings together stakeholders and representatives to help improve and shape sustainable community and greenspace development. Known as Parcel 24, Jay was asked to create a temporary bike park in land allotted for mixed-use development in several years time.
Jay consulted with UniverCity to develop a bike park concept that catered to all ages, skill levels and abilities with construction to take place following the winter. In spring 2013, Hoots completed the bike park facility, with an additional advanced – expert jump line built in 2014.
