Mosholu Parkland malls needs your support. Help keep the flowering dogwood trees that were planted in the center malls on Mosholu for environmental reasons. The beautiful trees were planted by the senior forestry division of PARKS for ecological purposes to help nature restore it's landscape and beautify the area.

In response to a request to have trees planted on Mosholu by the Community Board 7, residents, and NYPR, PARKS senior forestry division planted trees throughout Mosholu that included the Mosholu malls center medians. The center vision was created and installed by senior forestry and Director of Tree Preservation PARKS in collaboration with another 2 senior forestry employees.

PARKS acting on a civil complaint that the trees were wrongly due to no community input of planting on a historic landscape, PARKS personal now wants to forget all the work, money and effort it took to plant over 200 trees and the care the community has given them since then. The Friends group reached out to "preservation" agencies and there is no register on Mosholu landscape being historic even on a local level. Other research shows that even historic landscape can have tree planted as treatment to conserve and preserve landscape as a last recourse.

Why remove trees for non-ecological reasons? Why would PARKS consider removing them when the trees are doing exceptionally well and they are healthy.  There is still room to enjoy the center malls; walking, jogging, sitting and even passive ball playing. There are 2 playgrounds on Mosholu, the oval with a big field for football and other ball field areas. The Mosholu malls are for scenic enjoyment.  These trees have already positively impacted our area:

  •  Providing us with even more oxygen
  •  Absorbs the car pollution from cars driving on both sides
  • Absorbs noise on the parkway
  • Absorbs the rain and stops storm water from running off
  • Helps to absorb pollen from the male larger trees
  • Helps with erosion control while beautifying our area especially in the spring and summer

The community has taken care of these trees and wants to continue to keep them in their current location for many reasons. There may have been no community input when the trees were planted 2 years ago but there is now many community residents with input who want those trees to stay. The flowering dogwoods are part of our lives now in the center of the Mosholu Malls and they will be a scenic vision for us and many generations to come. It's already made history the day each of them were planted on our Mosholu Parkway malls. They are part of our Mosholu history.
