PARK HILL SAFE STREETS PETITION
The Issue
A Request for Immediate Traffic-Safety Improvements in
Park Hill
We, the residents of Park Hill in Denver, Colorado, respectfully request immediate action to
address dangerous speeding, reckless driving, and unsafe conditions on our neighborhood streets.
Our neighborhood should be a safe place to live, work, walk, bike, drive, and raise our children.
Yet Park Hill residents have experienced and witnessed numerous crashes and near-misses
involving children, pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and adults of all ages—during both the day
and night.
These are not isolated concerns. Residents have collected numerous firsthand accounts, reports,
photographs, and stories documenting crashes, near-misses, speeding, and dangerous driving
throughout our neighborhood.
The consequences have been devastating. People in our neighborhood have suffered serious
injuries, and lives have been lost.
Denver's Own Data Shows the Urgency
Denver's East 13th, 14th, 16th and 17th Avenues Safety Study analyzed five years of crash data
from 2018–2022. Across the study area, there were:
- 2,383 total crashes
- 537 crashes involving an injury or fatality
- 86 crashes involving a pedestrian or bicyclist
The City's study found that crash numbers generally exceeded what would be expected and
identified high speeds as a consistent concern.
Denver has also identified portions of 17th Avenue as part of its High Injury Network. The City's
East Area Plan states that the High Injury Network represents approximately 5% of Denver's
streets but accounts for about 50% of traffic deaths.
Denver's 2050 Strategic Transportation Plan reports that 47% of traffic deaths and serious
injuries occur on just 5% of Denver's streets—the High Injury Network. It also reports that 25%
of people killed in Denver traffic crashes from 2017–2021 were people walking or bicycling.
By signing below, you support immediate traffic-safety improvements in Park Hill and urge
our City Council representatives and the appropriate City agencies to take action.
