Enforce the universal masking requirement enacted at Parley’s Park Elementary School
The Issue
Parley’s Park Elementary School (PPES) has seen a rapid increase in cases of COVID-19, which activated the criteria outlined in the Summit County Public Health Order 2021-01 on 10/31/21 for the school to implement a universal masking requirement for 14 days. The Park City School District directed PPES not to enforce the order and instead asked students to wear masks per parental instructions. District leadership has stated that the order was “unenforceable.” As noted by the school nurse on 11/4/2021 to KPCW, of the nearly 600 students, she “counted 102 students with no mask at all Wednesday, and another 50 with masks hanging off them but not worn properly. Four staff members she happened to see were unmasked as well, though the staff number wasn’t a comprehensive count.” (https://www.kpcw.org/education/2021-11-05/park-city-schools-superintendent-directed-parleys-park-not-to-enforce-mask-mandate-cases-spike Since the Public Health Order was activated on 10/31/2021, PPES has continued to see an increase in cases of COVID-19. Current cases counts can be found here: https://ppes.pcschools.us/
We are requesting that the Park City School District Administration and School Board implement the universal masking requirement as outlined in Summit County Health Order 2021-01: “Face-Coverings or Face-Shields will be required for all students, faculty, and administrative staff during the school day, including after school extra-curricular activities, at that school’s campus until the incidents are lower than the Threshold Trigger as determined by the Health Officer.” In addition, we are requesting the Park City School District Administration and School Board provide accurate and timely updates regarding cases counts and implementation of COVID-19 protocols across all Park City School District schools.
