Why the Paramount–Warner Bros. Discovery Court Battle Matters to Star Trek Fans

A new Associated Press report says Paramount has agreed to delay closing its proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery while a court considers a challenge brought by 12 U.S. states.

The states argue that bringing these major entertainment companies together could reduce competition and leave audiences with fewer choices. Paramount disputes those claims and maintains that the transaction would strengthen competition.

Although this court case concerns a much larger corporate transaction, it highlights an issue that directly affects Star Trek fans: the growing concentration of beloved entertainment within closed, company-specific streaming platforms.

Star Trek is owned by Paramount, and we fully recognize Paramount’s right to benefit from the extraordinary franchise it has helped preserve and develop. Our petition does not ask Paramount to surrender its ownership or remove Star Trek from Paramount+.

We are asking for broader, non-exclusive licensing.

When culturally important franchises disappear from widely used platforms and become available primarily through one company’s subscription service, access becomes more fragmented. Families must pay for more subscriptions, longtime viewers lose convenient access, and fewer new viewers encounter the stories naturally.

The concern becomes even more significant when large entertainment companies seek to combine their studios, streaming platforms, networks and libraries under fewer corporate owners.

Star Trek itself teaches us to be cautious of excessive concentrations of power and to value diversity, openness, cooperation and the free exchange of ideas. Its stories have encouraged generations to approach unfamiliar beings, cultures and perspectives with curiosity rather than fear.

Those ideals deserve the widest possible audience.

Paramount can continue making Star Trek a central part of Paramount+ while also licensing classic series to Netflix and other platforms. That would create more consumer choice, introduce Star Trek to new generations, provide additional licensing revenue and ensure that this culturally important franchise remains accessible.

The current debate over media consolidation makes our request more timely than ever:

Keep Star Trek on Paramount+—but do not keep the final frontier confined to a single streaming ecosystem.

Broader access would honour both the fans who have supported Star Trek for generations and the inclusive future that Star Trek asks us to imagine.
