Sports Card Manufacturers are allowing 3rd party distributors and "sports card scalpers" the opportunity to make exponential markups, resulting in real collectors being forced to choose whether to continue purchasing product at 5x to 10x MSRP.

This is both an industry and a hobby that is flooded with people trying to make a dollar, but it’s an industry that’s even more dependent on its foundation: The sports card hobby will always be shaped by true collectors.

We need manufacturers like Panini and Topps to allow both established local card shops and fellow collectors better access to their own recommended retail price.

The whole retail allotment at Target and Walmart has turned into a weekly spectacle of a Black Friday mob, every week of the year. I’ve seen grown men fight over who got to the last box first, I’ve seen grown women make deals with the vendors from Excel and MJ Holdings so that as soon as they get to the store, they stock someone's two shopping carts before even attending to the shelves. And if you want to obtain the product that Target and Walmart allocate online, you literally have to pay tens of thousands of dollars to be a part of a “bot group” like KSR Automation, who proudly touts their ability to grab all of the product available by showing pictures of their digital checkout receipts.

The problem is that very few of the people mentioned above are actual collectors. Most are retail “flippers”, or self-proclaimed “sports card scalpers” who specialize in buying up products online or in-person and re-sell them for up to 10x the price they paid for them to the real collectors.

If this continues, where consumers that are not card collectors get 99% of the product at MSRP, then this landscape of the sports card industry as a whole, surely begins to look more and more like a leaning tower of Jenga. We'd like to avoid another collapse of the sports card hobby! Action and change is needed!
