Pakistan: Strict regulations needed to become an Imam of a mosque?

The Issue

We request the Government of Pakistan and the “Prime minister office” to open a debate regarding qualifications of an imam in a mosque and religious teachers in a madrasa setting per their respective sect. Like other occupations (doctors, engineers, technicians etc.), becoming an imam has to be subjected to high standards in their discipline.

As a member of Pakistani society, we feel obliged to ensure that Imams and religious teachers, who are community leaders in many instances are focusing on the” positive” Islam.

The government should introduce measures that include but not limited to:

-          Mandatory course that emphasize on the message of tolerance, peace, equality, forgiveness, and general humanity.

-          Mandatory exam on Islamic ethics and laws for licensing and registration.

-          An oath of allegiance to Islamic Republic of Pakistan, recognizing the laws of the country and upholding the constitution.

-          A system to enforce violations and fines.

We hope to have some action as a first step to curb religious based violence and increase focus on peaceful teachings of Islam.

Thank you.
