Every day, school children, neighborhood residents, families, and dog walkers cross West 6th Street at Sommerheim Drive. While school zone warning signs are currently posted, there are no painted crosswalk lines on the roadway.

Because the pavement lacks visible markings, drivers routinely fail to yield to pedestrians. This creates an immediate, dangerous hazard for our neighborhood students navigating this active corridor to and from school, as well as for local residents walking the area.

Key Safety Details:

Proper Alignment for Pedestrian Safety: Years ago, lines were marked on the east side of this intersection, forcing pedestrians to walk with traffic along Sommerheim Drive. Restoring the painted crosswalk on the west side ensures students and residents walk facing oncoming traffic—the recognized safety standard where sidewalks are limited.

Jurisdiction Confirmed: Millcreek Township previously deferred action under the assumption that West 6th Street required PennDOT handling. PennDOT has confirmed in writing that crosswalk markings and local pedestrian controls fall under Millcreek Township’s direct municipal responsibility.

Essential Community Connection: This intersection is a vital pedestrian crossing for the entire neighborhood. A visible crosswalk clearly establishes pedestrian right-of-way, heightens driver awareness, and creates a safer environment for everyone.

Our Call to Action:

We urge the Millcreek Township Board of Supervisors and the Public Works Department to schedule and paint high-visibility crosswalk markings across West 6th Street on the west side of Sommerheim Drive before a preventable accident occurs.

Our children and neighbors deserve a safe, clearly marked route across this busy road.
