Mayo county council please listen now the Kiltimagh Velorail needs planning permission
The Issue
Following the decision by An Bord Pleanala that the Kiltimagh Velorail project needs planning permission, we are asking Mayo County Council and Minister Michael Ring to start listening to the Kiltimagh greenway campaign. Thousands of people support the idea of a greenway from Athenry to Collooney throughout the West of Ireland; Kiltimagh needs to be part of The Western Rail Trail Greenway we cannot afford to miss out on the brilliant idea to create a greenway from Athenry to Collooney using the closed railway route. The Velo-Rail proposed on the closed railway for 12 km at Kiltimagh is an interesting idea, but it will deny access to the route for the general public and mean Kiltimagh does not benefit from the tourism boom the Western Rail Trail Greenway will create. This is why we have always asked for an access path to run alongside the closed railway for the section devoted to the Velorail. A cycle/walkway path alongside the velorail will enable safety access and provide a complimentary resource for the Velorail company to rent out bikes as well as velo rail carts. It will be an added attraction for Kiltimagh. Planning permission is now required for the VeloRail project, we are asking Mayo county council to start listening. Please include in the plans to be submitted to the public for inspection a parallel greenway/safety path that will run alongside the 12km of the velorail section. Allow Kiltimagh to benefit from being part of the Western Rail Trail which will run on the closed railway from Athenry to Collooney, as well as having the unique velorail project. The two ideas compliment each other; All we ask is that Mayo county council listen to what we are saying. Thank you. Kiltimagh Greenway Group.
