Padma Vibhushan for Shri Subodh Kumar (78), Dairy Scientist
The Issue
Shri Subodh Kumar is world's foremost expert on Indian Dairy Practice and its scientific validation by modern findings. Shri Kumar is an Engineer from one of the first batches of what's currently IIT Roorkee. A successful innovator and technopreneur in the field of telecom transmission and widely travelled and honored around the world for his technological prowess, he has dedicated past 20 years of his life to the scientific study of dairy industry in India and around the world.
He founded and is the patron of what is perhaps the world's largest and most advanced dairy farm based on the Gaushala System called as Maharshi Dayanand Gau Samvardhan Kendra. This farm has more than 800 cows in a ~12 acre land in Ghazipur on Delhi-UP border. It has a hydroponics plant for producing fodder and practices natural breeding of cows. Cows are fed an optimal mix of green fodder. It produces high yield of milk even as it follows natural practices ONLY. Various experiments have been carried out on this farm and the learnings have been incorporated over past ~15 years when it has grown from 10 cows to about 800 today. A number of Indian dairy farmers, scientists and experts visit him for his advice.
It is so unfortunate that his stellar contributions are not a case study in management schools or his life story has not found way into our children's textbooks.
I propose his name for Padma Vibhushan for his lifelong contribution to the country and the dairy farm sector that will also inspire people to work further in this direction to meet India's nutritional needs along with several other social and economic benefits.
