We are hearing the on-air announcements of an election emergency at WBAI, warning of the possibility that the election may fail due to lack of quorum.  

However, Pacifica's by-laws call for an *automatic* extension if quorum has not been met.

There is concern about the cost of extension, however, ultimately it costs more to give up on this election, not to mention that it violates the by-laws.  

Article Four, Section 5

"If the required quorum of ballots is not received by the Elections Close Date, then the Elections Close Date shall be extended by up to four additional weeks until closed by the National Election Supervisor."  [emphasis added]

**The use of the word 'shall' legally means an action is mandated, not optional.**

A note about dates: Normally, the Elections Close Date is September 30.  However, the entire elections process is occurring later this year, due to the bylaws referendum which closed on July 7, 2021. 

We therefore insist that the election period be extended by at least two weeks, until October 29, 2021.

While it is not mandated by the by-laws, we also strongly suggest that:

The National Election Supervisor uses the additional time to set up 'robo calls' to remind members who have not voted that the election is underway and to provide the relevant website information.  

A truly democratic organization goes to great lengths to enfranchise its members.
