Pacific walruses in trouble—climate action needed now
The Issue
An estimated 35,000 walruses sought refuge last month on land instead of ice as they typically do. Why? A big reason is climate change and the now missing sea ice in the Arctic.
As this ice dwindles, the Arctic will experience some of the most dramatic changes our generation has ever witnessed. This loss will impact the annual migration of wildlife through the region, threaten the long-term health of walrus and polar bear populations, and change the lives of those who rely on the Arctic ecosystem for their way of life.
We need US action to fight climate change to be as strong as possible for two reasons: to cut US carbon pollution and begin to combat climate change impacts, and to inspire other countries to do the same. If we show Japan, Canada, China, Europe and the rest of the world that the United States is serious about tackling climate change, we will inspire those countries to commit to strong climate action.
Stand up for US leadership and a global effort to fight climate change.
