Approval For Parents Of Football Players In The Pac 12 To Attend Games In The Stadiums
The Issue
To Governors Gavin Newsom (@GavinNewsom), Doug Ducey, Jared Polis, Kate Brown, Gary Herbert and Jay Inslee and Mayor Eric Garcetti (@EricGarcetti),
We, parents and family members of football players in the PAC 12 request that a plan is developed before the start of the 2020 season that allows families of the players to watch games live in the stadiums where they will be played.
Social distancing for family members in an outdoor stadium that has 50,000-80,000 seats is easily accomplished. Checking temperatures before entering the venue, wearing masks and distancing by at least 6 feet between families are standard recommendations by the Center for Disease Control and the World Health Organization—all guidelines that would be simple to follow. In addition, face shields are inexpensive and also readily available at most local drug stores.
Families of football players in the PAC 12 make many sacrifices so that their sons can play football and serve their universities as well as the vast community of college football fans throughout the nation who will be watching the games on tv. Our sons are often practicing or playing during holiday breaks making them unavailable to spend time with their families—-precious time that families of students who do not play football get to spend together.
It is important for the emotional health of the football players in the PAC 12—many who are still teens—and their families that family members be allowed to offer traditional support while they play weekly games. We believe that this can be done safely in open air stadiums while adhering to Covid-19 safety protocols mandated for businesses.
If any safety modifications are needed (i.e., opening an extra entrance or two, or providing hand sanitizers in the bathrooms), there is ample time to put in place whatever is needed to ensure the safety of all.
Just as the community at large yearns for the upcoming football games, we yearn to cheer for our boys as we have done every season since they started playing football in the youth leagues. The PAC-12 Commissioner has given approval for families to watch their sons play in stadiums; we eager await approval form local mayors and governors!!
Please bring our PAC 12 families back together!
Sincerely,
Parents and Families of Football Players in the PAC 12
