Open P.S. 144Q for hybrid learning now!
The Issue
Parents and neighbors, please sign this petition to re-open P.S. 144Q in Forest Hills, NY, for hybrid learning immediately. We are seeking 250 signatures by Friday 11/27/2020 to deliver this petition to Mayor De Blasio and Chancellor Carranza.
We, the families of P.S. 144Q request our school re-open for hybrid learning immediately and that the same practices that have kept our school safe be supplied and supported across the schools in NYC so that all hybrid programs may be re-opened.
P.S. 144Q is a safe space. The administration is following all of the COVID-19 protocols outlined by the DOE and CDC. Parents and students are respectful of our new normal and have also been adhering to distancing, masking, and all the other requirements that make in-person learning possible. We have all consented to random testing, which has been happening in the building weekly. We feel our school's experience shows this can be done safely across the schools in our district.
P.S. 144Q has recorded ONE positive COVID-19 case since opening in September.* We believe P.S. 144Q is the safest place for our children these days. Our children should not be punished for rising COVID-19 rates across the city.
Students are at risk of anxiety and depression. Remote-only learning exacerbates the issues that some students will encounter. Many students are not privileged with the means to have their education supplemented outside of school. Special needs cannot be met in a remote-only setting.
We, the undersigned, call on Mayor De Blasio and Chancellor Carranza to reopen hybrid learning immediately. Our elected officials should recognize the importance of in-person learning for our children. Elementary school children need the in-person interaction, project-based learning, access to special needs services, meals and the enriching environment that elementary school provides to them. Closing our elementary schools indefinitely should be the absolute last resort.
