Oyster Bay Waterway - Action and Remediation petition

The issue

Oyster Bay Waterway in the Sutherland Shire has been badly affected by the ever increasing deposition of slits and sediments since the late 1960s.

The deterioration of the bay and adjacent creeks has lead to:

  • Regular serious safety issues with standard mariners, often children, unable to be rescued from the vast reaches of quick sand like mud
  • a reduction in or elimination of access for residents to their natural environment
  • poor water quality causing localised extinction of sea grasses and some marine animals and making birds sick
  • flooding of residences and sporting fields adjacent to creeks due to constriction of flow
  • offensive odours making it necessary for residents to remain indoors.

I am completing this petition to ask the Legislative Assembly to call on the NSW govt to 1) Return the bay to its original pristine state by removing the sediment that has accumulated in Oyster Bay and its tributary creeks since 1970
2) Improve the health of tributary creeks by installing and maintaining sufficient SQUIDS to prevent the majority of new slits and sediments from entering the Bay
3) Fund board walks, platforms and jetties so suburbs which have lost access to the bay in recent years may do so again for fishing, kayaking, swimming and enjoyment of the natural vistas.
