Save Chiltern Edge School from closure
This petition had 3,101 supporters
The closure of Chiltern Edge School would be a devastating loss to all the children in the school, to their families and to the local community it serves. It is a small school with a proud history of looking after its pupils.
House building continues relentlessly in Sonning Common and the surrounding areas. In the area, demand for school places at both primary and secondary level is high and will only increase further.
Whilst the school is situated in Oxfordshire, it is near the county boundary and serves children from both Berkshire and Oxfordshire, as the catchment area covers both counties. Councillors may concern themselves about their own county, but to us the county boundary is merely an imaginary line on a map and should not influence the future of this school.
If the school closes, Sonning Common will never have a secondary school of its own again. Children will be forced to take buses to other schools, in other people's communities. It then becomes difficult for them to join in after school activities as there is no transportation home.
They will take places and resources in those schools. This will impact the children and parents of those schools who may find that resources are overstretched or it becomes more difficult to get a school place.
How can it be that the immediate reaction to the recent Ofsted report would be a proposal to close the school and not to fix it?
We, the people that sign this petition: pupils, past pupils, parents, residents of the community, parents of other local schools all believe that this school should be kept open and given the support it requires to make it a great school once more.
