Maintain the Support Fund for the poorest people in Oxfordshire
Maintain the Support Fund for the poorest people in Oxfordshire
The Issue
We, the undersigned, demand that Oxfordshire County Council should abandon its plans to drastically reduce funding to help the most vulnerable people in our county. Oxfordshire County Council is planning to cut the Support Fund (formerly the 'Social Fund'), and all of its grants to Advice Centres. The Support Fund is used as a last resort by local people struggling to make ends meet. Unfortunately when responsibility for administering the Social Fund was transferred to the County Council, it imposed extremely strict conditions on applying for Support Fund grants. We demand that the fund be maintained so that the poorest people in Oxfordshire are not pushed into destitution. Oxfordshire's advice centres bring in up to 45 times as much funding for their clients as the County Council spends on them. They help people escape poverty and debt and are needed now more than ever. We believe it is wrong that the most vulnerable in our society will be punished by these cuts and urge the County Council to reconsider.
