Change the Plural of Mongoose to "Mongeese"

The Issue

Good people of the English-speaking world,

We live in troubling times. Between tumultuous political struggles, hateful acts of violence, and our ever-declining ecosystem, good news is well overdue.

Well, friends and comrades, we can begin by bettering a common unifier of 1.5 billion of us: the English language.

The plural form of the noun defining many of the species of the Herpestidae family is "mongooses". A single mongoose should naturally become one of many "mongeese" when joined by its friends, as in "geese". Why should a noun which contains the word "goose", another noun that refers to an animal, be modified into a different plural?

What happened to common sense? Have we truly lost all notions of linguistic conventions and continuity?

Please join me in petitioning the Oxford English Dictionary and Merriam Webster to formally change "mongooses" to "mongeese".
