Thank you all for your ongoing support against moves to criminalise buskers in Oxford. We had an all day musical protest on the streets of Oxford last Thursday which was well attended by musicians and artists from all over the country who sang songs and played music together to highlight the absurdity of criminalising street culture in Oxford. Our protest made the front page of the Daily Telegraph and was featured in the Times, the Independent and the Mail Online. I was interviewed on BBC Radio Five live and also on the BBC World Service, taking the plight of Oxford's buskers far beyond the UK. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/11627964/Smile-while-you-busk-or-pay-a-1000-fine.html Oxford City Council have released the responses of people to their consultation about using a PSPO to regulate busking amongst any other behaviours in public space. Only 32% of people surveyed supported the ban's use against buskers with 54% against. Oxford City Council try to explain this away by saying that a lot more responses were received after these proposals were covered in the media. It would seem that they don't welcome the scrutiny their proposals have received. You can see their report here: http://mycouncil.oxford.gov.uk/documents/s23804/Report_City%20Centre%20PSPO.pdf We have invited the council to work alongside the busking community, the Musician's Union and the Keep Streets Live Campaign to introduce busking guidance that doesn't criminalise people and encourages dialogue and negotiation. You can see a Best Practise Guide for busking developed by buskers with the local authority in Liverpool as an example of the approach we are asking Oxford to adopt: http://keepstreetslive.com/uncategorized/2014/09/best-practice-busking-guide We hope that Oxford City Council take note, not just of the coverage of the busking protests or the nearly 5000 people who have signed this petition so far, but also of the clear majority of people who completed their own consultation. It's time for the Council to take a step back and rethink its plans, Thank you all for your ongoing support, Kind regards, Jonny Walker Founding Director Keep Streets Live Campaign http://keepstreetslive.com
