Hi everyone. We recently found an alarming report that highlights the dangers of baiting campaigns.  We would like to ask you if you'll share the petition with one person today. Every signature counts.

For at least 20 years now we have known that rat bait kills wildlife yet government still persists in making it as readily available as lollies by allowing it to be sold in supermarkets, hardware, produce and convenience stores.

In one attempt to eradicate introduced rabbits, rats and mice from a sub-Antarctic island, the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service baited in the winters of 2010 and 2011. This resulted in significant mortality of several native seabird species through primary and secondary ingestion of second generation anti rodenticide (brodifacoum).

The second season of baiting occurred throughout May and June of 2011. Over May to November 2011, ground teams recovered approximately 1,450 individual dead birds.
The final report indicated the following are deaths attributed to the baiting campaign -

Kelp Gull - 988
Northern Giant Petrel - 693
Brown Skua - 512
Pacific Black Duck and Mallard - 157
Southern Giant Petrel - 38
Unknown Giant Petrel - 31
Unknown bird - 5

The observed mortalities were the tip of the iceberg , as many birds will have died at sea or been otherwise undetected by ground personnel. While the true scale of the mass mortality event is unknown, it was highly detrimental to many of the affected seabird populations. In addition, it might well be the critical ingredient to the extinction of some native owl species in Australia.

Please help get the worst of these rat poisons (SGARS) of the shelves by signing and sharing the petition below. If you have already signed please consider telling just one person today how horrific these products are. Education is important too!
