The Issue

Every day, hundreds of students at Windermere High School face significant challenges in getting to and from school. Many cannot access the school bus due to living outside the eligible zones, leaving them no option but to walk long distances in this Florida weather. For these students, electric bikes and scooters provided a lifeline – until their use was suddenly banned by the school administration.

Windermere High School's decision to prohibit electric bikes and scooters hinders the mobility of students who depend on these affordable, efficient, and environmentally friendly transportation solutions. These students now have long, exhausting commutes, which not only affects their punctuality and attendance but also their overall academic performance and well-being.

Statistics show that regular physical exertion in the form of lengthy commutes to school results in exhaustion and reduced focus in class. According to recent studies by the National Center for Safe Routes to School, having a reliable and suitable mode of transportation significantly improves students’ academic engagement and performance. Electric bikes and scooters are not just trendy gadgets; they are practical solutions that assist students in meeting their educational commitments with ease.

California, for example, has implemented state policies that recognize the importance of micro-mobility options for students, resulting in more inclusive and supportive academic environments. By following this example, Windermere High School can embrace an inclusive approach that caters to the needs of all its students, ensuring no one is left stranded or disadvantaged.

The environment also benefits when more students use electric bikes and scooters, reducing car emissions and alleviating traffic congestion around the school vicinity which is crucial for developing sustainable transportation habits.

We urge the school administration to consider the significant impact this ban has on its students. A more student-friendly solution can be implemented, such as designated parking zones, safety workshops, and registration systems for electric bikes and scooters to ensure security and accountability while respecting local safety guidelines.

Join us in advocating for a reversal of this ban and help students regain safe, sustainable, and convenient access to their education. Sign this petition if you believe in fair and inclusive educational access for all students at Windermere High School.
