Living in Ashe County, North Carolina, I've seen firsthand the heartache and frustration that the family of Chad Mast is experiencing. Some of my friends are part of his grieving family, and their despair is wholly unjust. It is a travesty of justice that law enforcement officers, even when clear evidence points to wrongdoing, are not held accountable for their actions.
 In 2024, Chad Mast was tragically killed, and all indications suggest he was a victim of excessive force by the Ashe County Sheriff's Department. Bodycam footage, revealed on May 5, 2025, after persistent efforts by WBTV, shows a sheriff deputy Jacob Bledsoe and Cody Call threatening to choke Chad Mast, using obscenities that no law enforcement officer should utter. Coupled with the autopsy results indicating that he died from homicide asphyxia of the neck and torso essentially he was strangled to death,  the evidence is overwhelming and can no longer be ignored.

Yet, the grand jury decided not to charge the officers involved, leaving the family without answers or justice raising further questions about transparency and accountability within the department.

It's crucial that those in power recognize the importance of accountability, especially for those who are supposed to serve and protect our community. By overturning the grand jury's decision, we can restore faith in our justice system and show that Ashe County demands accountability from its law enforcement bodies.
