The Issue

The Michigan State Police recently rejected our conscious and committed Moran Township’s official request to extend the lower speed limit zone further west on US-2.

They claim that standard state rules won't allow a change. We, the community, say that rule is broken.

In the span of just over a month, this exact stretch of road caused a severe fatal motorcycle crash killing Michael Anthony Perault and a severe accident involving former St. Ignace Mayor Paul Grondin.

The current design forces drivers to accelerate to 65 mph while blind to tourists and locals trying to turn out of motels and businesses such as like August 20th when a motorist thought they had time to pull out from Burger King, killed Mike Perault on his motorcycle while Mike Perault was in the passing lane of west bound US-2.

We urge you, our Michigan Representatives and Legislatures to draft and introduce site-specific legislation that bypasses standard MSP restrictions, legally mandating an extension of the reduced speed zone further west on US-2 under High-Risk Safety Corridor Exceptions.

By signing this petition, we request that State Senator John Damoose and our state representatives step in to override the MSP decision.

We require emergency legislation to extend the reduced speed zone further out and force MDOT to immediately install flashing safety beacons and center turn lanes where common sense would have them before another life is lost.
