Overpopulation of Feral Cats in Rama

The Issue

Community members have noticed an alarming increase in the feral cat population in various parts of Rama First Nation. The cats have become a nuisance, peeing and spraying in yards, houses, on our children’s toys, outdoor furniture, and any belongings that are outside. They fight each other at night and get very loud when people are trying to sleep. The cats themselves also appear to have a poor quality of life, as they often appear sickly, thin, stinky, and injured or bleeding.

We as a community would like to see the leadership and administration of Rama First Nation formulate and execute a humane plan that tackles the issue of overpopulation of feral cats. Investing in a long term approach, such as live trapping and spaying the cats, would be a good way to address this issue.
