Email servers have had themselves the tendency of marking stuff as read and unread, that way you won't have to read the email. This does not apply to all email servers however, for instance with their app versions, so one of these days an update should take place so that marking something as read or unread can start applying to them as well, thus saving you from having to read through everything that hasn't yet been read when there's a massive amount lying around.
