Outlaw Intentional Balloon Releases in South Carolina

Outlaw Intentional Balloon Releases in South Carolina
The Issue
Ask any local fisherman and they will tell you they have encountered remnants of celebratory balloon releases in our beautiful oceans. These rubber and mylar traces don't just make our oceans look dirty - they pose a deadly threat to marine life. We all recognize the importance of commemorating the loss of loved ones, birthdays, or the imminent arrival of a new family member. Yet, we need to consider how these acts can unwittingly turn into environmental hazards.
A report from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency noted that discarded, non-degradable latex and mylar balloons, when ingested, can lead to the death of marine animals, mistakenly recognizing them as food. We, as South Carolinians, owe it to our ocean and future generations to protect our marine ecosystem. It's time for us to find better, non-polluting alternatives to commemorate our most cherished events. On July 1, the Florida State legislators' outlawed intentional balloon releases. Let's push for the same law in the State of South Carolina.
The Sea Beyond Foundation wants your voice to be heard. Please sign this petition and share with your friends to protect our oceans one discarded balloon at a time, and encourage our lawmakers to take action.
