The Issue

As someone who deeply believes in the sanctity and potential of every human life, I am compelled to address a pressing issue in our society: the rights of unborn children diagnosed with Down Syndrome after 24 weeks of pregnancy. I have personally witnessed, through friends, family, and community, the immense joy and love that children with Down Syndrome bring into the world. They deserve the opportunity to thrive, just as any other child would.

In the UK, about 750 babies are born with Down Syndrome each year, yet there is a prevailing stigma that leads to the termination of pregnancies once a diagnosis is made, even late in the term. Medical advancements and societal support systems have come a long way, ensuring that individuals with Down Syndrome can lead fulfilling and productive lives. Despite this, there is a significant number of abortions performed at or after 24 weeks due to a Down Syndrome diagnosis. This is a critical point where the fetus is on the cusp of viability outside the womb, and it is crucial that we protect these lives.

Banning abortions after 24 weeks when Down Syndrome is diagnosed is not about restricting women's rights but about offering life to those who can make a meaningful impact on the world. It is about recognizing the inherent value of individuals with Down Syndrome and extending our compassion and support to them and their families.

I propose that we enact legislation to make exceptions in current abortion laws, specifically for cases reported after 24 weeks involving Down Syndrome. We must work collectively, alongside healthcare professionals and advocacy groups, to ensure that expectant parents are given comprehensive information on the support available to them.

Support networks, special education programs, and inclusive communities are increasingly proving that people with Down Syndrome can achieve remarkable things. With proper assistance and understanding, they can not only thrive but also contribute significantly to society.

Please join me in urging lawmakers to recognize the importance of life and potential, irrespective of a Down Syndrome diagnosis. Let us commit to creating a more inclusive and supportive environment that values all lives equally. Sign this petition to protect and cherish the rights of unborn children diagnosed with Down Syndrome after 24 weeks. Together, we can make a difference.
