Out of Sight, Out of Work—Where Will Street Vendors Go?

Out of Sight, Out of Work—Where Will Street Vendors Go?
The Issue
Street vending is an honest livelihood that helps millions of people feed their families, yet governments continue to treat street vendors as obstacles rather than contributors to society. In their pursuit of road clearing and urban order, authorities often sweep away vendors in an unclean and inhumane manner, confiscating their goods and leaving them with nothing. While maintaining order in public spaces is important, completely removing vendors without offering alternative solutions is not the answer. Unlike those who engage in illegal activities, street vendors earn their living through hard work and determination. They provide affordable goods and services to the public, create local jobs, and enhance economic activity in their communities.
What makes this issue even more heartbreaking is that many of those affected by these harsh actions are individuals with disabilities, elderly vendors, and parents struggling to provide for their children. Despite their physical limitations, they continue to work tirelessly, determined to support their families. Yet, instead of being met with support, they are forcibly removed, their livelihoods destroyed in an instant. This injustice pushes them further into poverty, leaving them without options for survival.
Instead of simply displacing them, the government should recognize street vending as a legitimate economic activity and implement structured policies that support vendors while maintaining urban order. A designated vending zone should be established. One that allows vendors to work freely while also ensuring cleanliness and efficient traffic flow. Rather than resorting to forceful clearing operations, authorities should collaborate with vendors to find a sustainable solution that benefits everyone. This includes integrating waste management systems, providing financial and business training, and giving vendors access to legal permits that will formalize their businesses.
This petition calls on policymakers, local governments, and urban planners to take immediate and humane action to protect street vendors and give them the opportunity to earn a livelihood without fear. Street vendors are not problems to be erased, they are hardworking individuals who deserve the right to work with dignity. The government must stop treating them as nuisances and instead provide safe, designated spaces where they can legally operate. It is time to replace harsh evictions with real solutions—ones that uplift the vulnerable and create an inclusive economy. Sign this petition now and stand for justice, compassion, and a future where no one is denied the right to work and survive.
