Our Water, Our Health: Demand Safe Drinking Water in Sanger

Our Water, Our Health: Demand Safe Drinking Water in Sanger
The Issue
Dear City of Sanger Officials,
We, the undersigned residents of Sanger, Texas, are submitting this petition to express our deep concern regarding the extremely high levels of chlorine and toxins present in our municipal water supply. The overall quality is poor. This issue has become a serious and ongoing problem affecting the health, comfort, and daily lives of our community members.
Many residents have reported that the water:
1. Causes illness in pets after drinking tap water, with symptoms including vomiting, lethargy, and diarrhea.
2. Has a strong, chemical smell, particularly noticeable during showers and when our children bathe.
3. Bleaches clothing and linens during normal laundry cycles, causing financial loss and inconvenience.
4. Forces families to purchase costly water filtration systems, which should not be necessary to access clean and safe tap water.
In addition to these everyday issues, excessive exposure to chlorine and other toxins in drinking water can pose serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions. Documented health concerns associated with high chlorine and toxic levels include:
1. Respiratory irritation from inhaling chlorine fumes during hot showers or baths.
2. Skin and eye irritation, especially for children with sensitive skin.
3. Gastrointestinal discomfort from ingesting water with high chlorine content.
4. Potential formation of harmful byproducts such as trihalomethanes (THMs), which may increase the risk of certain cancers with long-term exposure.
We are also deeply concerned about the health and safety of children in our schools. If Sanger ISD campuses do not have proper filtration systems in place, students may be drinking this water directly from fountains and cafeteria taps, unknowingly consuming levels of chlorine that many families have found unsafe for their own homes.
Many residents have already voiced their concerns to city officials and have been told that the chlorine levels are “within regulatory limits.” However, the daily experiences of our families—ill pets, damaged clothing, chemical odors, and health discomfort—tell a different story. In some cases, residents have reported the heartbreaking loss of pets who became ill and died after drinking tap water, further reinforcing our fears that something is seriously wrong.
We, the residents of Sanger, formally protest these findings and urge the city to re-evaluate what is considered "acceptable" when the public’s health and well-being are clearly being affected.
We respectfully request that the City of Sanger:
1. Immediately investigate and publicly share current chlorine and toxin levels in the water system.
2. Reduce chlorine concentrations to within safe and reasonable levels as defined by EPA and TCEQ standards.
3. Provide regular testing data and updates to residents about water quality.
4. Assess local schools for water safety and ensure children are not exposed to harmful levels.
5. Consider reimbursements or relief for families who have had to invest in home filtration systems due to the current water conditions.
Clean water is a basic necessity, and the residents of Sanger—especially our children—deserve a safe and reliable municipal supply without health risks or undue expenses. We urge the city to act swiftly and responsibly to resolve this matter.
