The Issue

UPDATED 28 October 2019, Monday. 1030H:

As I have sent a letter summarising our concerns and suggestions (consolidated from comments here) have been sent to the relevant authorities , I am no longer collating signatures and comments for that purpose. However you are welcomed to still sign this petition and leave a comment IF you feel strongly that community spaces should be free from inappropriate content especially for the young. Abusive, demeaning, unconstructive comments will not be tolerated.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE THAT ANY REQUEST FOR MONETORY DONATIONS TO BRING THIS REQUEST TO MORE PEOPLE ARE FROM CHANGE. ORG AND NOT FROM ME.

Protect our children from obscene sexual content and violence on OTH media screens

Since 2017, I have been giving feedback to Our Tampines Hub about the inappropriate sexual content it screens in the public areas. However, little has been done to address these inappropriate media content. I have decided to start this online petition after my post I left on Our Tampines Hub Facebook page went missing after garnering many similar comments by other concerned members of the public. In that post, another lady shared screenshots of her email to OTH in 2017 about the same concerns. She received no response from them either.  The 5 MPs for Tampines GRC and advisors to Tampines PA /Town Council as well as IMDA were also tagged in that post.

This issue has gone on for far too long without any effort of the OTH Management concerned to address these. The incident that happened to my young sons and myself yesterday afternoon was the final straw. Something must be done before the indecency and obscenity worsens. No child and even adult should be assaulted by such unsavory and inappropriate media images in public areas.

On 23 October 2019, I picked up my boys who had just finished their Active SG soccer class and was walking through the main thoroughfare of OTH (pictured below). I was shocked by what we saw playing on the big screen. It was a scene that lasted more than a few seconds, more like several minutes, of men at an adult club (looks very suggestive of a strip club) with women skimpily dressed and dancing provocatively around poles.

My boys and I were NOT intending to watch the screen but had to head through that area to get home. I went into the Public Service Center and asked for help from the information counter staff. The gentleman at the counter was apologetic but he could not do anything to stop the inappropriate content from screening. I had asked for the contact of the appropriate personnel I could speak to but again, he said that he is unable to put me in touch with the relevant personnel as the OTH management is not 'front facing' (I assume this means they won't meet with any members of the public regardless of issue). I then proceeded to fill up a feedback form as given to me by the service personnel.

Over the last 2 years, I have been lodging my concerns about these inappropriate media content eg sexual/sensual images or overly gory and violent to the staff at the OTH Information Counter right in front of the big screen and just beside the control room that projects these movies and MTVs. Each time, I was met with staff telling me they cannot do anything except to give feedback to the management.

OTH has worked hard in providing a good range of family-friendly, community building activities through these past 2 years. These inappropriate content are often screened during the hours and days where there are many children about. There are also MANY enrichment companies catering to the young and very young at OTH. There is also a childcare centre and a student care centre at OTH. There are also several primary schools in the immediate vicinity of OTH. Many children can also seen walking through these public areas on their own as they make their way to classes and home. These children should not be ambushed inappropriate sexual and violent media content where we as parents least expect to find them. These are high traffic public areas where a great mix of people from different ages and backgrounds frequent. There must be more sensitivity applied to media content screened.
.
Surely, we can do better by our children by offering them a more wholesome selection of media content? There is no need to use sex and violence or any other form of sensational content to draw crowds to OTH.
