Our Seniors Deserve More Than a TV to Pass the Day
Le problème
Across Canada, many seniors living in long-term care, rehabilitation centres, and other residential care facilities spend hours each day with very little meaningful activity or social engagement.
I was inspired to start this petition after seeing this firsthand with my own grandmother. While she receives the care she needs, there are long stretches of the day where residents have very little to do beyond sitting together and watching television.
Not every family can afford a luxury private residence — but quality of life should not be a luxury.
We are calling for governments across Canada to prioritize and increase support for meaningful recreational and social programming for seniors in residential care.
This could include regular live music and entertainment, games, arts and creative activities, gentle movement and exercise, social events, outdoor activities, visits from community organizations and programs that encourage residents to interact, participate and have something to look forward to.
Our seniors have spent decades contributing to their families and communities. Providing care should mean more than meeting their basic physical needs. Human connection, purpose, laughter, stimulation and enjoyment matter too.
No senior should spend their final years simply watching the days go by because they cannot afford a more expensive facility.
Please sign and share if you believe seniors across Canada deserve meaningful connection, activity and quality of life — regardless of their income.
