Reform the ELHS Handbook to allow hats/durags

Reform the ELHS Handbook to allow hats/durags

The Issue

In our student handbook, we have a very clear dress code found in it. On page 19 of the student handbook, rule #8 states that “Bandannas, hats, “beanies,” and other head wear cannot be worn indoors. (This
includes the hood on hooded shirts.)”

I have spoken to an extensive amount of student and staff about this rule. The majority have expressed that this rule is redundant and is unnecessary, and we’ve even had a petition already made that accumulated it’s goal of over 1,000+ signatures.

I got my haircut on Wednesday of this week to a pretty low fade. I did this to acquire waves, which is a hairstyle that requires a lot of conditioning & attention. To maintain this hairstyle, you have to get your curls to lay down and keep them moisturized so that the hair will maintain it’s shape without any complications. I wore a durag most of my school day on Wednesday and Thursday, seamlessly, with no issue. It wasn’t distracting, hazardous, or tumultous to me or any of my peers, and it it no way signifies me as a “thug”. This afternoon, on my way to the bathroom before 6th period started, I was stopped by Mr. Kiger and told to take it off.

I have nigh perfect attendance, and while in school, it’s virtually impossible to condition my hair to get waves when I’m not allowed to wear my durag. My hair will lose it’s shape & moisture, therefore resetting my progress.

I know of multiple students who use a durag/wave cap to maintain and condition their hair for various hairstyles, and I feel as though this rule doesn’t need to be enforced. If not fully eradicated, it can be altered to at least allow basic headwear to be worn. We can leave the updated rule open for interpretation, and if the headwear seems overly distracting, hazardous, or tumultous, it can be taken care of accordingly.
