Safety First, Our Future, Our Responsibility. End Gun Violence in Saginaw, MI.
The Issue
Gun violence. It is everywhere in the United States, but especially in our local city of Saginaw, Michigan. Saginaw is reported to be among the U.S. cities with the highest homicide rates, just above Detroit at number 5. A total of 24 murders were reported in Saginaw in 2020, or 50.2 for every 100,000 people - which is above the national homicide rate of 6.5 murders per 100,000. These statistics don't end in 2020. In 2023, in the first months, there have been 9 deaths by gunfire, all homicide. Not only that but 48 people were wounded by gunfire. Saginaw has already surpassed last year's total of nonfatal shootings by an increase of 20%.
They aren't just statistics in the media. Johnathan Lamar Van, age 21, Thomas McCray, age 21, Cortez Hampton, age 15, Dejuan LeOndrae "Quan" Lee, age 20, and Marquavis Keyshawn "Quay Smithers, age 17, are all boys who have lost their lives to gun violence in Saginaw. Their lives have been taken away and each and every one of them has families & friends who love and will deeply miss them. When is it enough? When does another life have to be lost to take action?
We need to act, but what can we do? The Child Firearm Sales Accountability Act. The Child Firearm Sales Accountability Act aims to prevent unlicensed firearm sales to minors by introducing stricter regulations, enhancing tracking, and promoting accountability in firearm transactions. Existing policies do not mandate comprehensive background checks for all firearm sales, including private sales. Many states do not require the tracking of firearms through bar codes. This new policy addresses these gaps by introducing universal background checks and tracking mechanisms. States like California and New York have implemented similar policies to enhance firearm tracking and reduce access to firearms by minors. Studies indicate that stricter firearm regulations and tracking mechanisms are associated with lower rates of firearm-related accidents involving minors. The Child Firearm Sales Accountability Act seeks to prevent unlicensed firearm sales to minors and enhance tracking mechanisms for all firearms. This comprehensive approach aims to improve safety, protect minors, and reduce firearm-related accidents in Saginaw, MI.
We are tired of gun violence. We are tired of gun violence not only on a national level but in our own town of Saginaw, Michigan. We can't do it alone and we ask for your support in signing this imperative petition. You can help change the lives of so many beautiful people.
It is more than just a saying; it is an initiative to move in a better direction. Safety first, our future, our responsibility.
