Evie Whaley started this petition to Cornwall County Concil and

Fistral Beach is known as Britain's surfing capital. It is perhaps lesser known for its dunes and the fragile ecosystems they harbour.

Over the past year, local seven-year-old Evie Whaley and a small team, including her mum Becky Miles and friend Melissa King have been heading down to Fistral in the mornings to clear up rubbish, which has been left overnight by people having fires and partying in the protected sand dunes. In 8 days alone, they have collected 11 bin liners. Last summer, their record was 21 bin liners in less than two weeks, including lots of broken glass bottles, cans, and food wrappers that could easily injure someone or end up in the ocean. All this from a one-mile radius from their home near Fistral Beach.

A local volunteer group called Friends of Fistral Dunes has also been working hard to protect, conserve, and manage the dunes, including planting marram and Christmas trees to help stabilise the dune areas that have been particularly susceptible to erosion. Unfortunately, we are also finding the trees burnt in the fires. For more information on the great work they are doing and to sign up for their newsletter, go to www.friendsoffistraldunes.co.uk

We all want to be able to enjoy our beaches at night. Still, we want Cornwall Council to start taking protecting Newquay's precious beaches seriously so that future generations can come to enjoy their beauty.

Other seaside locations have successful programs in place, creating jobs and setting rules around what is okay and not. We want the local council to hire beach patrollers, roam the beaches at night, and ticket people who are not respecting the rules, which includes; not having fires in the fragile sand dunes and littering. The fines then can help go towards the community and help pay the wages of the team.

Similar patrolling systems have been set up and piloted throughout the county (Penzance) and worldwide with great success.

Cornwall Council have been contacted on many occasions and have ignored locals' pleas, and it's time we take a stand. Please help us get this petition to 10,000. We will then be able to take this to our local MP Steve Double and start on a new path of protection instead of destruction.
