Our Kids Are Not a Revenue Stream: Keep Energy Drinks Out of Walled Lake Schools
The Issue
To the Walled Lake Consolidated School District Board of Education and Administration:
We, the concerned parents and community members of Walled Lake Consolidated School District, call on the district to immediately stop selling—and prohibit the sale of—energy drinks in all district schools, including through vending machines, school stores, cafeterias, and other school-operated or school-authorized vendors.
Energy drinks are not harmless refreshments. They can contain dangerously high levels of caffeine and other stimulants that can increase heart rate and blood pressure, disrupt sleep, trigger anxiety, and cause other serious health effects. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that adolescents not consume energy drinks. Yet the CDC reports that as many as 11% of secondary schools in some states sell them on campus - and 100% of Walled Lake high schools sell them, too.
As parents, we teach our children to make healthy choices. We expect our schools to reinforce those lessons—not undermine them by making products that pediatric experts advise against readily available during the school day.
We understand that these sales may generate revenue. But let’s be clear: our children are not dollar signs. They are human beings entrusted to the care of adults who have a responsibility to protect their health and well-being. No amount of vending-machine revenue is worth compromising that responsibility.
We also understand that some of these drinks are on the state and Federal government "approved" list of food and drink. Frankly, and with all due respect, we don't care. Just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you SHOULD.
Schools should be places where student health comes before profit. There are plenty of other ways to raise funds that do not involve selling highly caffeinated stimulant drinks to children and teenagers.
We urge the Walled Lake Consolidated School District to take a clear stand for student health by ending the sale of energy drinks in all district schools and removing them from all school vending machines and other points of sale.
Our children deserve better. Their health is not for sale.
We call on the district to do the right thing—and we ask our fellow parents, educators, and community members to stand with us.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter..
