The Issue

THE REAL QUESTION IS NOT ONLY WHAT HAPPENED.

THE QUESTION IS: HOW CAN WE KEEP OUR DAUGHTERS SAFE?

AS A FATHER OF A 10-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER, THIS HURTS DEEPLY.

Hearing about incidents of rape and sexual violence in Ahmedabad deeply hurts me as a father. My wife and I feel the pain, fear and helplessness that every parent can understand.

Our daughters deserve to feel SAFE — not only at home, but also while studying, working, travelling, living in a PG, or simply going about their daily lives.

THE AHMEDABAD INCIDENT
On the night of 8 August 2026, a young interior-design student staying at a PG accommodation in Ahmedabad's Anandnagar area was allegedly sexually assaulted on the building's terrace.

According to police reports, the accused, identified as Dharam Singh, was a security guard who had reportedly joined the premises only a few days earlier.

Police allege that he followed the woman to the terrace, restrained her with a wire and sexually assaulted her. He allegedly took her mobile phone and fled.

Following the complaint, Anandnagar Police, the Local Crime Branch and Ahmedabad Crime Branch reportedly launched a major search operation and examined CCTV footage.

The accused was subsequently arrested.

During a later police recovery/panchnama operation, police alleged that the accused attempted to escape and tried to grab a police officer's service weapon. During the reported struggle, police fired and the accused was shot in the leg.

The accused and an injured police personnel were taken for medical treatment.

The sexual-assault allegations remain subject to investigation and judicial proceedings, and the accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court.

BUT THIS INCIDENT RAISES A MUCH BIGGER QUESTION.

HOW CAN WE KEEP OUR DAUGHTERS SAFE?

Can we trust the security guards working in our societies, PGs and residential buildings?

Are proper background and police verifications completed before hiring them?

Do PG owners and societies actually know who has access to our daughters and families?

Are CCTV cameras working 24/7 and properly monitored?

Are terraces, staircases, parking areas and other isolated places properly secured?

Is there an emergency system through which a woman can immediately call for help?

Are security agencies properly verifying and monitoring the guards they deploy?

Do our daughters know their legal rights and know where and how to report harassment, stalking or sexual violence?

And most importantly:

ARE WE DOING ENOUGH BEFORE SOMETHING HAPPENS?

THIS PETITION IS A CALL FOR ACTION.

We need more than discussions, social-media outrage and candle marches after an incident.

We need PREVENTION, ACCOUNTABILITY AND FAST ACTION.

WE DEMAND:
✅ Mandatory background and police verification of every security guard before deployment.

✅ Regular re-verification of security personnel working in societies, PGs, hostels, schools and other residential premises.

✅ Proper CCTV coverage and monitoring in common and vulnerable areas.

✅ Controlled access to terraces, staircases and other isolated areas.

✅ Emergency panic buttons / helplines and clearly displayed emergency contact information in PGs, hostels and residential buildings.

✅ Strict accountability for security agencies and property managers when mandatory safety and verification procedures are ignored.

✅ Sexual-safety and legal-rights education for students, women and young adults.

✅ Simple, accessible and confidential reporting mechanisms for harassment, stalking and sexual violence.

✅ Fast and professional police response when a complaint is made.

✅ Swift, fair and transparent investigation and trial of serious sexual-offence cases.

✅ Strong protection and support for survivors and their families, without victim-blaming or exposing their identity.

OUR DAUGHTERS SHOULD NOT HAVE TO LIVE IN FEAR.

They should be able to study, work, travel, live independently and enjoy their lives with confidence.

Safety cannot be treated as the responsibility of a daughter alone.

SAFETY IS A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY.
Parents.
Schools.
Colleges.
PG owners.
Residential societies.
Security agencies.
Employers.
Police.
Government authorities.
And every citizen.

WE CANNOT CHANGE WHAT HAS ALREADY HAPPENED.

We cannot erase the trauma suffered by a survivor or her family.

BUT WE CAN TRY TO PREVENT THE NEXT TRAGEDY.

Let us stop being silent.

Let us demand accountability.

Let us educate our children.

Let us protect survivors and support their families.

Let us demand effective security systems.

Let us demand a justice system that is swift, fair, strict and effective.

THESE ARE NOT JUST SOMEONE ELSE'S DAUGHTERS.

THESE ARE OUR DAUGHTERS.

As parents, we should not have to live with the fear that something terrible may happen to our children the moment they step outside our homes.

100% SAFETY SHOULD BE OUR GOAL — NOT JUST A PROMISE.

🛡️ PROTECT. EDUCATE. VERIFY. REPORT. ACT.

IF YOU ARE A PARENT, CITIZEN, SCHOOL, PG OWNER, SOCIETY MEMBER, SECURITY AGENCY, POLICE OFFICER OR GOVERNMENT

AUTHORITY — PLEASE SUPPORT THIS CALL FOR CHANGE.

Because preventing one tragedy is worth every effort.
