Lack of Representation in Ottawa IL mural(s)

Lack of Representation in Ottawa IL mural(s)
The Issue
Ottawa, IL is known for/prides itself on being the location of the Lincoln-Douglas debate where Lincoln was confronted for helping and bringing about the abolition of slavery, as well as its Native American roots, yet in all murals around town, there is a lack of representation of POC. One specific mural was painted to represent the coming together of the community with common parades. This mural, along with others in town, is predominantly white, excluding individuals of any other race and ethnicity. During these times, we see that the black community, as well as other minority communities do not receive the equal representation, fair treatment, or inclusive welcoming into towns such as this one. This petition is calling for an update/remodeling of at least one or more of the several murals that lack diversity. I know of several individuals who have experienced instances of racism and/or discrimination around here, and I think that increasing representation and celebrating diversity can help improve, influence, and attract a better community.
