We declare that protecting the animals of Otsego County, NY is a legitimate and pressing source of public interest. Every year in Otsego County, NY countless animals are neglected, abused, abandoned, and simply fall victim to unfortunate circumstances. The Susquehanna Animal Shelter (SAS), the sole animal shelter in Otsego County, provides a highly utilized public service by providing for these less fortunate animals until they can find permanent homes. In recent years the SAS has been operating at a deficit. This budget model is not sustainable and in time the Susquehanna Animal Shelter will be forced to close its doors unless county funding can be allocated to assist with operating costs. County funding would not only allow the 99 year old establishment to continue running efficiently but also allow the SAS to work more closely in conjunction with other government entities such as Catholic Charities, the Sheriff's Department, and the Office for the Aging. Long term goals would include adding an Animal Control Officer well versed in agricultural markets law to assist with ongoing issues of animal neglect, abuse, and abandonment in Otsego County, NY. We must be the voice for those animals most vulnerable- the malnourished, the injured, the sick, the fearful, the abandoned. They need our help and that time is now!
