OSTRAVA INITIATIVE FOR THE SUPPORT OF FREEDOM AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN IRAN 

The Islamic Republic of Iran has been violating human rights and freedoms for many years. On 13 September of this year, the repressive authorities of the Islamic Republic brutally beat a 22-year-old law student, Mahsa Amini, who died after three days in police custody. The only reason for this appalling aggression was her so-called unsuitable clothing; under the rules stipulated by the government, Mahsa’s hair was not sufficiently covered by her hijab. Iranian society responded with mass protests, and the Iranian regime is brutally suppressing these demonstrations: hundreds of people have been killed, thousands arrested, and universities have come under siege. 227 Iranian parliamentary deputies subsequently called on the courts to impose death sentences on all those detained for participating in the demonstrations.  

As members of the academic community, we are in contact with our colleagues and students from Iran. We respect them, we sympathize with them, and it is unthinkable for us to remain silent in such circumstances. When a group of colleagues and students of Iranian origin asked us to help spread awareness about the situation in the country of their birth, we decided to support them by issuing a declaration of our support for human rights in Iran as well as through other activities – particularly by organizing lectures and discussions focusing on the current situation in Iran, which is not receiving sufficient public attention. In the letter below, our Iranian friends have spoken in their own words, and by signing their declaration we are expressing our support for those words.  
 
We respect the authors’ fears for their safety and that of their families, so we are publishing their text without revealing their identities.  
 
We would like to invite all our colleagues to consider engaging in similar activities at their own universities and institutions. We call on all citizens who are not indifferent to the current situation to add their own signature to the declaration and pass it on.  
 

Dear members of the academic community in the Czech Republic,   
 
Since September 16, 2022, the people of Iran have been tirelessly showing their dissent towards the official and unofficial policies of the Islamic Republic. These unprecedented demonstrations that are happening in schools, universities, and on the streets were triggered by the murder of a 22-year-old girl in “Morality Police” custody after being arrested for not covering her hair properly. During this period, paramilitary, police forces and Islamic Republic Guard Corps (IRGC) operated by the regime besieged, raided, and blocked the exits of major universities such as the Sharif University of Technology, Tehran University, the University of Tabriz, the University of Isfahan, and numerous other higher education institutions (and even dormitories) all over Iran.  
 
All in an attempt to make an example of the defiant students by means of arresting, torturing, raping, and murdering. Suffice it to say this abhorrent venture has only led to more and more people standing against the ongoing injustice and blatant disregard for human rights. As a group of international university students and members of the Iranian community in the Czech Republic, we take it upon ourselves to be the voice of the suppressed. Especially at a time when the internet in Iran is controlled by a government that does not want the news of these heinous acts heard by the global community and continuously disrupts the flow of information.  
 
By this letter, we hope to spread awareness to as wide an audience as possible and particularly involve the academic community in order to help tip the scales in favour of the people who are risking their lives, limbs, and loved ones in this campaign for human rights and freedom.  
 
It is crucial to emphasize that the Iranians living and studying in the Czech Republic love their country, wish the best for the people in Iran, and by no means support the Islamic Republic regime in their disdain for freedom, democracy, and fundamental human rights of their families, friends, and others who share the same national identity. But we need your and your colleagues’ help in this matter. Publishing facts on the daily struggle people inside and outside Iran face, recognizing the importance of women spearheading this movement, and providing moral support for our small community are some of the actions we believe can be helpful.   
 
As one of the particular steps helping us in our public call for support, we would like to kindly ask you, rectors, deans, professors, teachers, scientists, and all members of academia to sign this letter as signatories and broadcast our message via all means of communication at disposal to you and to your universities. Other forms of support are also highly appreciated in these trying times.

OSTRAVSKÁ INICIATIVA PRO PODPORU SVOBODY A DODRŽOVÁNÍ LIDSKÝCH PRÁV V ÍRÁNU 
 
Islámská republika Írán dlouhodobě potlačuje lidská práva a svobody. Letos 13. září represivní složka Islámské republiky surově zbila dvaadvacetiletou studentku práv Mahsu Amíní, která po třech dnech policejní vazby zemřela. Jediným důvodem bezohledné agrese bylo tzv. nevhodné oblečení – podle pravidel stanovených vládou hidžáb nepokrýval Mahsiny vlasy dostatečně. Íránská společnost reagovala masovými protesty a íránský režim je tvrdě potlačuje: stovky lidí byly zabity, tisíce zatčeny, univerzity se dostaly do obklíčení. Následně 227 poslanců Íránského parlamentu požádalo soudy, aby byli všichni zadržení účastníci protestů odsouzeni k smrti.   
 
Jako členové akademické obce jsme s kolegy a studenty z Íránu v kontaktu. Vážíme si jich, soucítíme s nimi a nedovedeme si představit, že bychom k nastalé situaci mlčeli. Když jsme byli požádáni skupinou kolegů a studentů s perskými kořeny, abychom pomohli šířit povědomí o situaci v jejich vlasti, rozhodli jsme se je podpořit prohlášením na podporu lidských práv v Íránu a dalšími aktivitami, zvl. organizací přednášek a diskusí k aktuálnímu dění v Íránu, kterému se nedostává dostatečné pozornosti. V dopisu níže necháváme promluvit naše přátele z Íránu jejich vlastními slovy a podpisem prohlášení stojíme za nimi.   
 
Respektujeme obavy autorů dopisu o jejich bezpečí a bezpečí jejich rodin, proto jeho text uvádíme bez odhalení jejich identity.   
 
Prosíme všechny své kolegy, aby zvážili obdobné aktivity na svých domovských univerzitách a institucích. Žádáme všechny občany, jimž aktuální dění není lhostejné, aby k prohlášení přidali svůj podpis a text dále šířili.  
 
Vážené členky, vážení členové akademické komunity v České republice,  
 
lidé v Íránu projevují od 16. září 2022 neúnavně nesouhlas s oficiální i neoficiální politikou Islámské republiky. Demonstrace ve školách, na univerzitách a v ulicích, které nemají v historii Íránu obdoby, vyprovokovala vražda 22leté dívky v policejní vazbě, do níž ji uvrhla mravnostní policie za to, že neměla dostatečně zakryté vlasy. Policejní síly, polovojenské jednotky a Íránské revoluční gardy řízené režimem zaútočily na přední íránské univerzity (například Sharifovu technologickou univerzitu, Teheránskou univerzitu, Univerzitu v Tabrizu či Univerzitu v Isfahanu), jejich studentské koleje a na další instituce napříč Íránem, obklíčily je a zablokovaly východy. Zastrašují vzdorující studenty zatýkáním, mučením, znásilňováním a vraždami. Je třeba říct, že navzdory těmto odporným skutkům počet lidí, kteří vystupují proti pokračující nespravedlnosti a bezostyšnému porušování lidských práv, stále roste.   
 
Jako skupina mezinárodních studentů a členů íránské komunity v České republice chceme být hlasem utlačovaných; je to zvláště důležité v době, kdy vláda v Íránu ovládá internet a brání všemi způsoby šíření zpráv o svých odsouzeníhodných činech za hranice země.   
 
Doufáme, že tímto dopisem oslovíme akademickou komunitu i širší čtenářskou obec, rozšíříme povědomí o tom, co se v Íránu děje, a prospějeme tak těm, kteří dávají při prosazování lidských práv a svobod v Íránu v sázku své údy, své životy i své blízké.   
Je důležité zdůraznit, že Íránci žijící a studující v České republice milují svou zemi, přejí lidem v Íránu jen to nejlepší a v žádném případě nijak nepodporují režim Islámské republiky v jeho pohrdání svobodou, demokracií a základními lidskými právy jejich rodin, přátel a všech, s nimiž sdílí společnou národní identitu.   
 
Potřebujeme nyní Vaši pomoc a pomoc Vašich kolegyň a kolegů. Věříme, že zveřejňování skutečností o každodenním zápasu Íránců doma v jejich zemi i mimo ni, uznání vůdčí role žen v tomto hnutí a poskytování morální podpory naší malé zemi patří k počinům, které mohou pomoci.      
 
Jedním z konkrétních kroků, jak můžete pomoci naší veřejné žádosti o podporu, je podpis tohoto dopisu. Chtěli bychom Vás, rektory, děkany, profesory, učitele, vědce a všechny členy akademické komunity, požádat, abyste se k nám laskavě připojili jako signatáři a šířili naše sdělení všemi prostředky dostupnými Vám a Vašim univerzitám. V těchto těžkých časech si ceníme i jakékoli jiné formy podpory.
