Federal zero tolerance policy on violence against Healthcare workers

The Issue

A cherished friend and fellow nurse was savagely attacked by a patient at Elgin Mental Health Center while on shift. She had to be airlifted due to the severity of her injuries. Violence against healthcare workers continues to increase. There is a "what could you have done differently to prevent this" attitude towards those who have been abused by leadership within the healthcare system. There are no federally instituted zero tolerance policies on violence against healthcare workers, although a bill has been introduced by Representative Joe Courtney which would mandate that OSHA require employers of social service employees and healthcare workers to implement violence prevention plans within the workplace. My hope is that by signing the petition we can hasten the process of getting such legislation passed. Leadership needs to be held accountable for the protection of its workers. There are over 20 million healthcare workers in the US. Over 20 million people who should have zero tolerance to tolerance of violence against them.
