It has been proposed to the Orem city council to demolish the north playground in Scera Park and build beach volleyball courts. Scera Park has been a gathering place for families and children for generations, and the north playground is a place to play for not only neighborhood children but for a large part of the Orem community. There is a second playground on the less accessible, hidden away south side of the park but it is geared toward much, much older children.

The north playground is very accessible being right off of the parking lot, right off of the school, right off of the walking path and right off of the Scera Shell. It is user friendly, having a ramp and small stairs for even the youngest of crawlers to enjoy. There are tall, more complicated features for older children. It is suited for kids of all ages.

It is the only playground around for over a mile and certainly the only safe playground around for children to walk or bike to. To get to the Altogether playground, children would have to cross very busy streets, making it unrealistic for children to get there easily. 

Do we need beach volleyball courts more than we need a large, safe, age inclusive playground for the neighborhood and city’s children?

Keep the north Scera Park playground!
