Recently Oregon State University, a public university located in Corvallis, Oregon, has allowed the display of the communist flag of Vietnam in their building. Allowing the communist flag to be raised is the equivalent of allowing the Nazi flag to be raised. We understand this is not illegal, but it is certainly not right to the over 2000 Vietnamese students currently attending OSU whose grandparents, parents, and/or they themselves were fortunate enough to have been able to survive the perilous journey to flee from the dictatorial rule.

Present-day communist Vietnam imprisons and tortures men and women for reading certain books, listening to certain music, speaking illy of their government. They have instant executions for those accused of more serious transgressions, such as practicing Christianity. They use these and numerous other tools of authoritarian control to stay in power. Those who have not lived under the regime often underestimate the power of tyranny. The communist flag displayed at OSU does not represent the students currently attending the school. It offends the students, their parents helping support them financially and emotionally, and their grandparents who have spent half their lives or over half their lives fighting in the war to give them one simple thing: freedom. Freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of press, freedom of assembly, freedom of petition—all the freedoms they would have otherwise taken for granted had it not been for their oppressed past.

We kindly ask OSU to remove the communist flag of Vietnam and instead better represent the university’s student population, the United States of America’s role in the Vietnam War, and the school’s agreement in protecting the Bill of Rights set forth for America at large, by displaying Vietnam’s freedom flag, a yellow flag with three horizontal red stripes. On April 13, 2007, a proclamation stating that this flag is the OFFICIAL flag of the Vietnamese people in the state of Oregon was signed by Governor Theodore R. Kulongoski, Secretary of State Bill Bradbury, Mayor Vera Katz, and Mayor Rob Drake.

Thưa Quý vị: Gần đây Oregon State of University (OSU) thuộc thảnh phố Corvallis, tiểu bang Oregon, đã treo lá cờ Cộng Sản Việt Nam tại Student a Memorial Union Building. Việc cho phép treo lá cờ này đồng nghĩa với việc cho treo lá cờ của Quốc xã. Việc làm trên không trái với luật Hoa Kỳ, nhưng đây không phải là một việc lảm đúng đắn đối với hơn 2000 sinh viên người Mỹ gốc Việt hiện đang theo học tại OSU. Những sinh viên này có ông bà, cha mẹ và / hay bản thân họ gặp may mắn để sống sót trên đường vượt biên mưu cầu Tự Do hay sống sót sau những năm tù khổ sai sau khi Cộng sản Bắc Việt chiếm nước Việt Nam Cộng Hoà. Ngày nay CS tiếp tục bắt bớ, tra khảo và tù giam những người lén đọc sách cấm, nghe nhạc trái ý họ hay nói xấu họ. CS kết án thật nặng những người vi phạm những tội như hành đạo Tin Lành. Qua những hành động tột cùng bạo lực như vay họ mới giữ được quyền lực của họ. Những ai chưa từng sống dưới chế độ này sẽ không tưởng tượng được quyền lực của họ. Lá cờ CS VN đang treo ở OSU không đại diện cho những sinh viên người Mỹ gốc Việt hiện đang theo học tại trường này. Lá cờ này xúc phạm đến những sinh viên, những bậc phụ huynh đang đóng tiền học phí và đang ủng hộ tinh thần cho các sinh viên. Lá cờ CS xúc phạm đến những bậc ông bà, là người đã hy sinh nữa cuộc đời người hay hơn nữa cuộc đời chiến đấu vì hai chữ Tự Do. Tự do Ngôn luận, Tự Do Tín ngưỡng, Tự do Báo chí, Tự do Hội họp, Tự do Thỉnh nguyện - tất cả những sự Tự do này nếu không thiếu trong quá khứ thì ngày nay sẽ không trân quý. Chúng tôi yêu cầu trường OSU hạ cờ CSVN và thay thế bằng lá cờ Việt Nam Cộng Hoà, cờ vàng ba sọc đỏ, tượng trưng cho những sinh viên người Mỹ gốc Việt đang học tại trường, tượng trưng cho vai trò của nước Mỹ trong Chiến Tranh Việt Nam, và sự đồng thuận của nhà trường để bảo vệ Tự Do cho toàn dân.
