Oregon Coast Military Museum Board Must RESIGN To Protect Children
The Issue
The Oregon Coast Military Museum is a historical/educational 501(c) whose mission is to preserve and honor Oregon's Military Heritage and History. The OCMM's Director, Geoffrey Cannon (27), was taken into custody July 11th due to an investigation into an inappropriate relationship with a minor who was a volunteer at the museum he had groomed for over a year starting when she was 14. On July 22nd 2025 Geoffrey Cannon was indicted by Lane County grand jury of 4 counts of sex abuse. He has since been released until a pretrial hearing in October 2025.
Some time after this, an informal meeting of the Board of Directors, headed by President and Geoffrey's father, Gary Cannon was held along with the victim's family.
Geoffrey's criminal actions were justified by his father Gary Cannon, suggested the victim "knew what she was doing" and another member of the Board said that she might have been a "promiscuous little slut" in response to the family telling the Board that the victim was a naive girl that had never been in a relationship prior to working at the museum. This victim blaming and slut shaming of a minor child was recorded and shared with local media. The Board decided to place Geoffrey on a paid leave of absence.
The Board has demonstrated ethical and moral failings in addressing this matter and blaming the minor victim of abuse for the crimes. The Boards shocking lack of accountability, failing to safeguard the minor volunteers they continue to solicit, and victim blame demonstrate their inability to operate a safe educational institution.
I am calling on all the Officers of the Board to step down or resign and to suspend Geoffrey Cannon's pay from the museum until the investigation is concluded.
