Order an Independent Review of Child-Safety Failures in Ladson
The Issue
Two little girls in Ladson are dead, and I cannot get past the same question that so many people are asking right now: how did this happen after relatives had already raised alarms? We are talking about repeated concerns, prior welfare checks, reported contact with the Department of Social Services, and a situation that people around this family say they were desperately trying to get someone to take seriously. When I hear that deputies were already familiar with the home, it stops me in my tracks.
This is bigger than one criminal case. Yes, the court process matters, and accountability in court matters, but we also need answers about the system around these children. If family members reportedly called for help, if police, DSS, and crisis workers had already been to the home, then our community deserves to know what was seen, what was documented, what actions were available, and why those two girls were not brought to safety in time. Without that review, nothing changes, and the next warning signs could be missed too.
I am calling for Charleston County leaders, the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, and South Carolina child-welfare authorities to order an independent review of every prior welfare check, DSS contact, and mental-health crisis response connected to this home, and to publicly release the findings they legally can. That review should identify where communication broke down, whether existing protocols were followed, and what must change immediately when very young children are the subject of repeated safety concerns.
Emory Deacon and Harlow Deacon should still be here. If you believe warnings about children must lead to real intervention, not just another visit and another missed chance, please sign this petition. We owe these girls more than grief after the fact. We owe them the truth and real change.
