Dear Mayor Jacobs and Commissioners,

It was recently brought to my attention that the county just extended its red-light camera program for another two years until September 2019. This was done with no supporting safety statistics. Additionally, the extension was authorized by Procurement and Public Works without being added as an item to an agenda for discussion or vote, while many other jurisdictions are ending their programs. This is unacceptable. The State House of Representatives overwhelmingly voted to ban red-light cameras by a vote of 91-22 in March. I’m confident you will find that the majority of your constituents do not want these cameras, and they do not increase safety-- in fact, statistics and studies show that we are arguably less safe with red-light cameras on our roadways.

Red-light cameras are a for-profit scheme designed to fleece Orange County's residents and visitors in order to fill government coffers and to line the pockets of American Traffic Solutions. This program ultimately hurts our tax base by operating much in the same way the despised private prison industry operates. It also operates at the expense of safety.

Please ask the Procurement and Public Works Departments to rescind this extension as soon as possible.

Thank you,

David Shaw
